Top Tools for special fx makeup artists featuring guest blogger kel liew

Halloween is right around the corner, which means potential clients are most likely submitting their requests for all sorts of scary, ugly, gory or aging Special FX makeup. Maybe you’re even trying to create the perfect balance of scary and daring yet costume party-friendly for yourself! If you’re not already a prosthetics designer or FX pro, the thought of transformation makeup shouldn’t scare you. We asked SFX Artist Kel Liew to share some tips to help simplify the process –

Hi everyone! My name is Kel and I’m a self-taught SFX Artist from Singapore. In addition to being an SFX Artist, I’m a Bridal/Fashion MUA and Hair Colorist. I first came across Qosmedix when Mykie, a special FX artist and social media influencer recommended the company in one of her videos. One of my favorite Qosmedix items is a Dropper Bottle with Screw-Top and Blunt Needle Tip for products like hair oil, artificial blood or basically anything! The needle tip delivers a precise amount of liquid flow. I also use a Qosmedix Beauty Supply Organizer to store my tools. The customizable compartments are great for keeping small supplies neat.

Qosmedix stocks many other additional items that complement SFX. Their new Divider Jars allow for a variety of products or shades to be in one convenient jar. Artists can depot their product into the jar and lighten their kit for traveling. To mix, blend and apply these colors, Qosmedix has a line of mixing palettes and spatulas.

For creating irregular patterns or blending face makeup, Qosmedix Stipple Sponges are the go-to. They’re also great for creating natural-looking freckles and blemishes. They also have tons of disposable products for applying makeup. The Detail Applicator is really useful for drawing precise lines in difficult areas or applying liquid eyeliner, and because working with glues can sometimes ruin your brushes, it’s great to use disposable ones like the Angled Eyeliner/Brow Brush. For finishing off your look with a powder, glitter formulation or even some dirt (character makeup has a wide range), Powder Sprayers will make the job significantly easier. I sampled some of these products when I was taking a course at Cinema Makeup School in Los Angeles!

I’m so glad I’ve been able to share with you some of my favorite FX products from Qosmedix, and I hope that I’ve inspired you to create some incredible looks this Halloween season and beyond!
